Visit the National Medal of Honor Museum of Military History and learn about the origins of the prestigious medal. Shortly after the Civil War began, Congress authorized the distribution of medals to honor petty officers that distinguished themselves by their gallantry in action. With this, the “Medal of Honor” was born. The first Medals of Honor were presented to six surviving members of Andrews Raiders, on March 25, 1863. This action took place just outside of Chattanooga. Jim Wade, the museum’s director, will share this piece of Chattanooga and National history with us.
