Alex Leone attends Solebury School. She was raised by her mother and grandmother and attended an all-girls school before Solebury. Because her upbringing was so centered on the value of women’s independence, she now works to raise awareness about the importance of comprehensive education for girls. To spread the word at school, she and her friend, Veronica, started a club for girls, GirlForward, which is connected with the United Nations campaign to end child marriage, called GirlUp. Also, she is creating an extracurricular program which will train adolescent girls in life skills so that they are equipped not only with academic knowledge but also practical knowledge — financial planning, basic home improvement, interview skills, etc. — in order to develop a strong sense of confidence and independence. Outside of school, she is a competitive Irish dancer and pianist.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
