The Effects of 5G

5G is the newest generation of cellular networks, replacing the slower 4G networks. 5G is 10 times faster than 4G at transmitting data. 5G communication is on an entirely different frequency than 4G, so it requires new technology. To reap the rewards of these faster speeds on a mobile device, 5G hardware must be in the device for it to handle the 5G frequency. 5G is great at transmitting large amounts of data fast, but it is not good at transmitting over long distances. 5G networks require new infrastructure to be able to move the data long distances; therefore, new towers need to be built to transmit the data across the country. This cost is estimated to be 300 billion dollars just for the US alone. Many companies are rushing to get their 5G infrastructure built so they can reap the rewards. The full release of 5G is expected in 2020, but it will take a while before all of the country is blanketed. Today, 5G is available in New York, Dallas, Kansas city, Los Angeles and other large cities. When 5G completely replaces 4G, there will be very little latency issues and virtual communication will be much faster and higher quality. New businesses may arise that enable an American surgeon to robotically perform surgery from the U.S. on a patient in Pakistan. Smarter cars that drive themselves will be able to use the 5G network to communicate instantaneously with stoplights and other cars. The gaming industry may benefit a great deal with faster load times and more amounts of data being manipulated. Virtual reality games with no lag would allow a plethora of new games via the virtual reality headset. Although 5G is only in its infancy in some large cities, its effects in the future can be seen clearly already. From the practical applications of a simple google search, to the complex remote surgery from across the globe, 5G will truly change the world.
